Public Library Directors 101: Training for New (and Newish) Directors – Midstate Library Service Center, Berlin

April 12, 2018, 9:30 am – 12:30 pm

This half-day training for new (and newish) public library directors is geared towards anyone who became a new library director within the past two(ish) years. Library Consultant for Governance and Management Lara Keenan will review the many and unique facets of public library directorship in Vermont. What do you need to know about how public libraries work in Vermont? What does the Vermont Department of Libraries (VTLIB) do? What deadlines should you know about? What is your job vs. your trustees’ job? What laws govern your work? How do you manage the expectations of your employees, trustees, patrons, and local government officials? We will present a checklist of questions to ask, things to know, and places to go for training in the unique aspects of Library Director work (including other VTLIB continuing education classes). You’ll also meet other new directors and build a network of support as you continue your education in the powerfully-important work of being a VT Public Library Director.
