Public Libraries - Service Area Population

Service Area Population numbers are updated annually by the Department of Libraries. They come from the American Community Survey (ACS) 5-year estimates from the Census Bureau. The most recent numbers (2018-2022) came out in December of 2023. Please be aware that ACS estimates can have some volatility from year-to-year, especially in very small communities. If you see a large one-year change, you should treat it with some uncertainty until it's confirmed in future years.

Data in the Spreadsheet

  1. Service Areas (1st tab) – Shows the total population for each library, and the towns and percentages that make it up.
  2. Population Formulas (2nd tab) – Shows the formulas for each library.
  3. By Town (3rd tab) – Lists each town, and the library/libraries that they financially support.

Explanation for the Numbers

  • Libraries are allotted the population for any town/city that they receive tax support from.
  • If multiple libraries receive tax support from a town/city, the population is divided based on the proportion of the tax support.
  • Villages who provide direct support are allotted to their supported library, and their population is removed from the town count for any other libraries.
  • Libraries who don’t receive tax support are listed with the full population of their town for informational purposes, but this isn’t divided with any other libraries in the town.
